Saturday morning, Steve and I were responsible for breakfast: bacon, eggs, and biscuit twists. I realized that I'd forgotten to pack powdered sugar for the glaze, so Steve picked some up at an Amish market along with more bacon and eggs. At least, I thought he'd bought powdered sugar. When I began to mix the glaze, I quickly realized that the proportions were all wrong. When I checked the bag's label, it read "donut sugar." Based on the consistency, I assumed this was the sugar they used to make the creme filling in donuts. It didn't glaze quite as nicely, but I figured looks didn't matter. Finally, I tasted a bit of the glaze from the bowl when the twists were frosted, and blech! it was revolting! Lesson learned: donut sugar is NOT the sugar used to coat donuts as Steve had assumed, and it is not used as a stand-alone sugar when making the creme filling; it must be combined with powdered sugar to increase the sweetness. I'm guessing that this was a cornstarch and sugar mixture that served to thicken donut creme. We scraped off the glaze from the biscuits and had a good laugh. Truth be told, I loathe when my baked goods don't turn out as planned, but, really, there's little I could do about it under the circumstances. As always, I had to shake it off, but it never makes me very happy. Just ask Steve; it's one of the rare occasions that I freak out.
Saturday we lounged around until finally we took our annual afternoon walk--a bit later than usual. I love Saida's little sock monkey hat.
After a yummy Mexican dinner courtesy of Ben and Jess, we surprised Janae and Jason with a mini wedding shower.
Heidi supplied the Marti's just like old times!
Ben entertained us with an exciting Grand Prix.
After the kids went to bed, the girls read (or napped) while the guys played games.
Sunday was another low-key day until we had to pack up and say goodbye.
We already can't wait for next year.
